There are people who are convinced, and the bad thing isn't just that, but that they try to convince others as well, that the more austere, rigid and colorless a place is, the better to live in. Dear readers, if you have a hunch that even if you yourself didn't, your friends would put you in that category, please go on to my next article, because this one will be a praise to colors.
Though it might be true that a neutral color is easier to match, this statement only holds if there indeed are colors to match them with: a gray wall with gray floors and furniture don't piece together, but annihilate each other even more. Not to mention the atmosphere which creates: it reminds you of rainy days, tired mornings, a life which doesn't worth living. But before we involuntarily commit suicide, let's turn to our beautiful subject: colors! Use them wisely, but boldly, don't be afraid of a little competition, composition or contrast. Wear your blue jeans with a pink top, your magenta curtains with a light blue ribbon, your apple green tiles with sunny yellow grout.
Once putting tiles was a professional work, and the less you knew about grout, the easier your life was. Today, people aren't afraid of getting a little dirt on their hands, especially if that means saving the fees of a handyman and doing some refreshing physical works after long hours in the office. Coloured grout can be used to spice up your mundane beige bathroom tiles, but also as part of a new creative little hobby, mosaic project, where you can make beautiful patterned trivets, decorate flowerpots or design picture frames. All you need for these are a basic idea about what you want to do, which you can get from the Internet, or even a library book and some materials from your next convenient store. Find your mosaic tiles in a little plastic bag with the "create your own mosaic" name on, or choose it yourself from left over bathroom tiles, and match the colors you want to use. The coloured grout will hold them together in terms of material and design as well, so make sure you choose the colour carefully. It's true that white goes with everything, but a well elected green for a flowery piece or blue for water or birds pattern can spice up your design in no time. Also, if you're just looking for forms and motifs instead of painted objects, you can have a beautiful color dynamics, life black and white with red coloured grout or dark earth colours with an orange tile grout.
Whatever you opt for, bear in mind, that the most interesting idea usually isn't the first one that comes into your mind, and if you spend some time to think it through, you'll find that the most convenient solution isn't the best looking too. So forget about the good old boring answers to colour matching, and remember: no risk, no game.
